Kaikoura Aquatic Centre Wa Kaukau is officially open

Posted November 17, 2021

Big hearts, sheer determination, and the collaborative hard work of many supporting organisations and locals have resulted in the completion of the stunning new Kaikoura Aquatics  Centre Wa Kaukau.  The opening day coincided with the 5 year anniversary of the 2016 devasting Kaikoura earthquakes,  as both a salute and acknowledgment to how the people of this small South Island, seaside town, renowned for whale watching, fishing, and crayfish have achieved in the last 5 years.

The population of Kaikoura as at the last New Zealand census in 2018 was 3912 people.  The new Kaikoura Aquatics Centre came in at $3.8m,  so the people of Kaikoura have something to be very proud of.

The new Kaikoura Aquatics Centre sports a new heated 25m x 12m lap pool, 6m x 10m learn to swim/ hydrotherapy pool, a beach entry toddlers pool, and a children's splash pad.  Water safety, aquacise fitness, learn to swim classes, and swim squad training have all resumed. For the not-so-competitive or fitness-focused bather, there is plenty of water space, to practice one's best dolphin dive, underwater fountain impersonation, or simply enjoy running under the giant blue whale tail and play dodge with the interactive water spouts on the children's splash pad.

Create Limited was engaged by the Kaikōura Community Trust as Lead Consultant to deliver a new outdoor community facility to replace the earthquake-damaged waterfront Lions Pool, with future growth potential.  CMT Construction Limited completed the building works and Coombes Aquatics Limited completed the specialised water services, ELBE membrane pool tank finishings, and automated splash pad water toys.
